Always check with your utility company before digging on your property, especially if you’re using any type of power tool. In more densely populated areas, you might be surprised to find out how many buried hazards are in your yard. This can include old gas lines, electrical lines, plumbing, septic drain fields, sprinkler lines, and more. In some cases, hitting a buried line with a shovel is just a minor inconvenience. In other cases—like if you hit a major electrical line—it can be deadly. So before you dig, always make sure to call your local utility company and double-check that there are no nasty surprises waiting for you underground.
